Crocheted cats with needle felting

I was going for a vintage look on the cats’ faces. I crocheted them, then covered them with a light glaze of wool. I needle felted the arms and legs of the small one; and the ears and tails of course.

I made these cats out of wool, and then needle felted wool on top. Needle felted the ears and other bits too.

Here is Hamsterino. The design came from the ‘hamsters’ my students in Japan would draw in their books- also a common sticker illustration.

His butt is filled with these fun plastic beads for weight. He is very nice to hold. It’s funny, the way I made the pattern, I did the legs and arms so they wouldn’t have to be joined later. One arm just went up, I didn’t mean for him to be waving all the time, but it’s cute, I like it.

The yarn is this wacky nubbly acrylic yarn. It was just screaming: ’silly hamster’.

Secretly: I’m kinda getting tired of the whole “kawaii” thing. Is that OK? I think it shows that I’m getting over having left Japan- well over one year after moving back to Ireland.

He’s still very cute.

Well… I’m not sure how things are turning out with the book. I’ve had a few people asking me about it. Surprisingly, you can see the amigurumi book on Amazon- and I think you can even order it, heh.
Right now, things are up in the air a bit! I wish I could say more

Is that a porcupine?

Honestly, I didn’t do any research about what a porcupine ACTUALLY looks like. i think i combined a hedgehog kinda face, an echidna body shape and long (but fluffy) quills.

I really miss my camera… it was stolen, but I was also stupid. My brother’s Kodak is fixed-focus, hence no closeups. Alas.

Alas. His body is made in a nice bit of alpaca I had leftover. I made the ears and the feet out of picots – which makes adding these tiny details alot easier. The quills are looped into every-other row of single crochet.

Meanwhile… my nephew was learning to crochet alongside me. I was so impressed with his patience, and his stick-to-it-tiveness. I’ve taught adults who gave up quicker. He is quite pleased with his little “bed”, which is for his city.
